If you can’t
feel even the slightest change in your emotions what is the point of having
them at all?
Just going
through the motions of feeling isn’t really living. I wanted this project to
make the viewer reflect upon what their emotions mean to them and how they
would be a different person with out them. The idea behind it was to show a
more impersonal perspective of emotion. I wanted to show the fragmenting of
neutral emotion and feeling into the six basic emotions (anger, sadness, happiness,
surprise, fear and disgust).
The inspiration
for this project came from the work of American artist, James Turrel. His work
shows incredible depth and asks a number of questions. The works that inspired
me are titled “Shallow Space Constructions”, “Veils”, and “Ganzfeld”.

The final video
is made up of photos and videos. Six time-lapse videos shown onscreen of the
editing and retouching of photos. Each photo begins with the same neutral pose and
other photos were taken of the model making different facial expressions to
coincide with the 6 basic emotions. These photos containing the emotions are
the ones that were edited and retouched and turned into time-lapse videos.
(Special thanks to Jana Graves for being such a great model.)
My original storyboard is below, the final video is slightly different but the storyboard was an awesome guideline:
